ASP

    ASP or Active Server Pages was a very popular web programming language back in the day. The heyday for ASP was around 2000 when E-Anything was hot and Microsoft could do not wrong. Active Server Pages played nice with Microsoft SQL Server, and VBScript was an accessible language for web developers transitioning from Visual Basic 6.0 or Microsoft Access. Microsoft offered an easily administered server platform with Windows Server, which was the only system that would reliably host ASP applications. Attempts by Chilisoft to develop an engine for ASP on Linux were for the most part unsuccessful.

ASP suffered from several drawbacks, many of them inherent in the underlying langauge of VBScript. One notable difficulty for ASP programmers was the lack of built-in library functions, forcing web developers to rely on third-party COM components to accomplish a number of common programming tasks. ASP source code was not compiled, like .NET, which caused both performance and security hurdles.
